Energy Centres & Heat Exchange Buildings, Bury St Edmunds & Norwich, Norfolk

Client: ESB Energy – CraigAlan Controls
Location: Bury St Edmunds & Norwich
Value: £2,300,000
Programme: 60 Weeks

The two innovative greenhouse developments are located at farmland sites near Norwich and Bury St Edmunds, covering 16 and 13 hectares respectively. One is located in Place Farm, Bury St Edmunds, and the other is at Crown Point, Norwich.

The Greenhouse Project was a world first in capturing waste heat from nearby water treatment works and by way of ground source heat pumps, injecting the previously wasted heat into the greenhouses. Heat is extracted from the water treatment works and transferred in a closed loop system to the heat pumps located at the greenhouse. Electricity for the ground source heat pumps is provided by the grid and Combined Heat and Power units. Such ‘CHPs’ have the added benefits of providing waste heat which further supplements the greenhouse heating and providing carbon dioxide to enrich the atmosphere inside the greenhouse to encourage plant growth. The carbon emissions from an on-site electricity plant funnels into the greenhouses for the plants to absorb and aid their growth.

Electrical Installation:

The scope of supply for this Electrical and Controls contract consisted of the design, procurement, installation and commissioning of systems and equipment:
Low voltage systems including LV Power supplies to the Heat Pumps, CHP Units, Motor Control Panels and Generator backup
Control and monitoring system hardware for the mechanical systems in the Energy Centres and Heat Exchanger Buildings at each site
Light and general power for each HEB building
Installation of Fire and Gas detection systems including interface to the Mechanical Plant to ensure shutdown during an emergency
Installation of Power Factor Correction Units
